Hello, my name is Diane Mayfield. I am the Junior High Science and Social Studies teacher here at Jasper School. I thought I would tell you a little about myself.
I grew up on a farm in the deeper (and much hillier) part of southern Illinois near a small town called Goreville, Illinois. I was very active in athletics while attending school. I played basketball for eight years and softball for four years. Sports weren’t the only thing I excelled at while in school. Academics were very important to me also. I graduated at the top of my class.
I spent one year at Shawnee Junior College then transferred to SEMO University in Cape Girardeau. When I finally determined what I wanted to do with my life, I transferred to SIU Carbondale to finish my degree. I graduated with honors with a degree in Secondary Education with a major in Biological Sciences.
I have lived several places before settling here in Fairfield. I lived in Carbondale for awhile then in Mazon, Illinois. I finally moved to Fairfield in 1990. The exact same weekend a tornado went through Barnhill. My new home was actually less than 2 miles from Barnhill. What a welcome!
I worked as a teacher’s aide in a special education room at Center Street School in Fairfield before I came to work here at Jasper. I began teaching at Jasper School in 1992. I currently teach junior high science and social studies. I also for a short time coached basketball and softball. When my two daughters were born I decided to leave coaching.
I really enjoy teaching junior high. I feel it helps keep me young and keep up with what is going on with today’s young people. No two days of teaching are ever the same! I love the subjects I teach and it is a real challenge to teach basically six different subjects a day. I enjoy trying to find new ways to present information and new activities for students to do in my classes.
Other activities I enjoy are the attending my daughters’ activities, outdoor activities, hiking, nature photography especially trying to capture lightning photos. I also enjoy all kinds of sports particularly slo-pitch softball and traveling. I enjoy visiting many nature and historical sites. I have been to the Rockies, Black Hills, Yellowstone, and Smoky Mountains. It is my wish to someday visit Alaska and drive the Pacific Coast Highway. I have also visited Washington, D.C. with Jasper School. Currently our 7th and 8th graders go every other year. It is the job of myself and another teacher to plan and help our students fundraise for this spectacular trip of a lifetime.
